"CLOSE TO YOU"
Episode Synopsis

Upstairs in Julia's room, rather than continuing to work on the roof, Sam is sanding the bottom of one of Julia's dresser drawers. She's 'conned' him into doing this because, "they are sticking", presumably from the leak Sam was contracted to repair. She is very much taken with Sam, and babbles on incessantly while he studiously works on unjamming her drawers. :)

Sam finishes the work on the dresser, all the while more-or-less ignoring what Julia is going on about, he checks the time and becomes a bit agitated, claiming that he's late for an appointment. Sam asks Julia's leave to abandon his equipment in her room for the night (man, double entendre city here! LOL) and bolts, promising to return tomorrow. Julia is both elated by the promise and let down by his hasty departure. Poor girl!

Unfortunately, it rains overnight, and Sam has neglected to put the tarp on the roof, having been 'otherwise occupied'. The next morning Julia tries to defuse Charlie's anger over the damage, explaining that it wasn't Sam's fault.

When Sam arrives, Charlie confronts him about the tarp, and asks him what he plans to do about the damage. Sam is chagrined that he forgot to put the tarp in place, and admitting partial blame, offers to do any necessary repairs for the cost of materials only. Charlie flat out refuses Sam's offer, saying he won't pay anything for the repairs because the damage was completely Sam's fault. Sam, disagreeing, tells Charile that the tarp would have been up before dark if Julia hadn't distracted him with other work. Even as Julia is admitting her fault in the damage, Sam is reacting to Charlie's anger with anger of his own and tells Charlie, "that's, like... three hundred dollars worth of work!" and, "well, I don't work for free." Charlie tells him he won't pay anything for the repairs. A very angry Sam asks him, "So what are we saying here? Are you saying you're firing me?" Charlie, tells him yes, he is firing him. Sam grabs his coat, telling Charlie, "fine, I have other work to do." and storms off, and Charlie storms off in the opposite direction-- leaving Julia gaping.

The following morning, Julia, looking like a stalker at this point, tracks Sam down at a coffee shop. As Julia enters, Sam is across the room in a booth, reading a newspaper and drinking coffee. Julia sits across from him, telling him that Charlie has calmed down and agreed that Sam's offer was fair, she hands him three-hundred dollars in cash. Sam seems grudgingly satisfied, yet confused as to how Julia knew where he was, she smiles and tells him she called his office and was told where he would be. He nods, still a bit confused and tells her he'll be back on the job tomorrow. She smiles at him... he just continues looking confused!

True to his word, the next day work has started again in full force. Julia greets Sam with a plate of freshly baked brownies. Sam, looking at the brownies, sees they have walnuts in them, and tells Julia he's deathly allergic to walnuts. Julia, slightly embarassed, tells Sam, "great, now you think I'm trying to kill you." A sweet moment between them, just before Charlie arrives, and tells Sam that he's glad he changed his mind, because now he can recommend him, and tell people what a "stand-up guy" he is, and walks away. Sam, being kind of bright, figures out that Charlie doesn't sound like someone who has changed his mind. Sam looks at Julia and says, "that was your three hundred dollars, right?" Julia admits that the money was hers, and Sam asks her why would she do something like that? She's stuck for words and a split second from blurting out her feelings, but manages a restrained repeating of her admission of her fault in the damage. She tells him she didn't want him to lose money because of her. He's obviously very confused by her, and tells her, "You people are a little strange." As he is walking away, Julia's peeved, and tells him that he could at least say "Thank you." He looks back at her, a bemused expression still on his face, and repeating her words, says, "Thank you."

Again, the next day (does everything happen "the next day" in this show?) Julia is in the kitchen slicing up a big 'ol eggplant (yuck), when Sam decends the scaffolding outside the kitchen window, and seeing her inside, taps on the glass. She turns and he beckons to her. As he steps into the kitchen doorway, she meets him, telling him that she's kind of busy (obviously a bit angry about their last words). Sam tells her that it will only take a few minutes... Reaching into his shirt pocket, he tells her that he was thinking about the other day and didn't feel good about the money. He pulls out the three hundred dollars and offers it back to her, telling her he felt like he was ripping her off. Julia refuses the money, saying that it was his, and tries to turn away. He stops her and, lifting a few bills from the rest, offers her half, saying that was the deal that he and Charlie should have made. She smiles and accepts the money.

Halfway turning to go back into the kitchen, Sam stops her, and slightly ashamed, he admits that he was out of line when he told her she was strange, saying he's sorry and that he shouldn't have said that. Sam tells her that she's sweet, and says very sincerely and with a slight smile, "so... Thank you."

Taken in the moment, Julia moves forward a bit and kisses him gently. Sam, taken by surprise, but not pulling back, is kissed. Julia looks up at him and says, "you're welcome." Then returns to the kitchen, leaving Sam standing in the doorway, with a slightly stunned look on his face.
