Bugger!
Much to our chagrin, today and tomorrow are the LAST DAYS to vote in the 2004 Sparkys! Oy! Here's the list of your finalists in the New Author Category (mind the ratings):
... and not liking the fact that, though the weather has been warmer, there is still 2 feet of snow on my deck.
Anyway...
Want something to read?
I highly recommend checking out the latest entries from Farscape Friday over in LJ land. They've had some great challenges these last few weeks, and you will not be disappointed.
Yep, read orchidcactus' "Like Chasing Random Patterns" and wanted to crawl into a little ball... it's hard to find time to sit down and read the great long stories...
And, admittedly, I pretty much stick to reading fic on Kansas and the LJ community -- if you want to read some awesome "DVD Commentaries" on some of your favorite stories, check out Thea's Undertones (NC-17, mind you) and Cofax's The Money-changer's Tale. I am sure there are more out there, but those are the only ones I've caught this week.
And over on Kansas, there've been quite a few posts by the regulars (aeryncrichton, kazbaby, scaperred et al) that I read voraciously anyway... nice to see Agent Rouka out on the boards now too. And this story, by sarahjane, hits all the buttons... sarahjane writes dark, and writes dark well. Except for a few minor typos and some confusing dialog exchanges, I can John so clearly in this story, set during Terra Firma. Given the circumstances, I can see this story happening, really I can.
I highly recommend you read the warning at the top. Forewarned is fore-armed. It's a good thing to do anyway.
Armed and Dangerous, by Agent_Rouka I love the pov because it reveals such an interesting take on familiar characters. Outside POV generates interest because of what we know, in contrast to what the outsider knows (and doesn't). It's refreshing, unique, and, in this case, very well done. Oh, and sub-text! It's all about the sub-text. Oh, yeah. I'm looking forward to more.
I'd feedback the author at Kansas, but it's not recognizing my login. *whimpers* I tried all of my passwords, but it keeps saying it doesn't recognize me. This is not good for my ego. ;)
Well... that didn't come out quite right. But seriously, if you really want to know if your writing is going somewhere and what you can do to make it over that next problematic hurdle, whatever it is... don't ask Ally. Don't ask the BBQ. Don't ask your Average Joetm. Ask a pro.
Thanks to the journaler over at somedaybitch, for the link to intel on the upcoming LA Writer's Conference that is being held at the Manhattan Beach Marriott in Los Angeles, the weekend of March 19-21, 2004.
So, get some work together, presubmit; get looked at by a pro. Get some feedback, other than: 'oh gawd' *closes eyes* "Yeah, that's pretty good." *sheepish smile*.
Seriously. Unless you already know your stuff is gonna rock our socks off, do not ask Ally to "tell you what we think". 'Cause, someday Ally's gonna answer and some ego is gonna get bruised. We promise. Ally is Simon, with a muzzle. Don't ask for it to come off unless you can take a beating. Thanks.
