thank the supreme court
Having to maintain a really positive attitude in the face of everything that's so completely wrong and more than a bit frightening, and find things that make everything worthwhile gets pretty tough from time to time. Unfortunately, no matter how messed up things are, you just have to keep slogging along.
Challenged out of three courses in my first quarter so I'll have a total of two quarters worth of credits in just one. Cut my degree completion program by a couple of months and we're ... of course ... very, very happy about that. Final instructor wanted me to stick around anyway to 'mentor' the other happy students. We think he's trying to buffalo us so that his class won't be quite so damn boring. Gave him the, 'we'll think about it and get back to you next week' dodge. Big fish syndrome is not the kind of food my ego needs.
Spent the week trying to find time to write a nice long email for friends and only managed to make it from Monday to Friday without collapsing in fatigue. Well, that's a lie. We collapsed in fatigue today.
Madonna tape from inky remains in constant rotation in the BATMobile since Christmas. Now, don't blame inky. We are the Madonna nut and inky is simply catering to our odd musical tastes like the wonderful friend nature and nurture created. One thing. Whenever 'Like A Virgin' or 'Papa Don't Preach' starts, we tend to shriek and hit the fast forward button. Heh. Anyone else encounter that phenomenon?
Jenn says she's missin' us, so this entry is for her, and this is for inky:
Hey, we never said we didn't have a bizarre sense of humor. *g*
Oh, boy. Bitchin'. Seriously. Strong omniscient pov from native objective narrator in this very short but delectable story. The imagery is intense! Warnings from the author of story inspiration out of wild musings about S4. But this didn't stop me, what with the whole 4K of words to read. Awesome. Loved it. Yum.
Blind Recc/Sure Bet. AUTHOR'S FUTURE NOTE: "Reflections" was written in a desperate burst of inspiration after BHTB, and posted before Prayer. It was not intended as a rewriting of the end of Season 4, but offered as one possibility, based on what we'd seen till then.
Blind Recc/Sure Bet. Hey, I haven't had a chance to watch my copy of ACOD, and it looks like this one has spoilers for it. The author inserts an apology, so we're thinkin' this cannot be good for our favorite couple. hm. I need to catch up on my eps this weekend. Gotta take a look at discretionary time for the weekend.
Three day weekend, and even as I've got more study time committed for today, I popped over to Leviathan and was pleasantly surprised at the number of new fic that have neatly piled up since my last visit.
Admittedly, I'm into the short but sweet fics right now. KB that wanders into the 30's get seriously evaluated strictly by virtue of available time. I love Kansas, but while time remains such a precious commodity, I'll probably only be dropping in on Leviathan when I need a quick fix.
Another new to me author, I think, name seems familiar, but I think if I'd read this author before I'd be trailing them like a big ol' hound dog, beggin' for more. Purely from Ally's POV, this is excellent J/A NC17 fic. Nearly pure smut, but the character interaction weaves from innocent discourse to hot intercourse while they explore their alternatives. We wanna know from what fandom Mosca has migrated.
At 40K this one would have been too long to tempt, but, you know, the author thing. Couldn't take a pass. Had to read it. Twice. And OMG. Just love that pov. It's like a double blind. Beautiful. This puppy is so carefully constructed it's amazing it came out at all. Read with care. Then read again. We don't need puppet shows when we have stories like these waiting to be told.
Answering Feldman's Multiple Johns challenge (thanks, Feldman). Hey, and bonus on the challenge. It's bound to spark a plethora of tender, tasty-morsel short fic. Mm. Fling a link to your response to this challenge so we can savor. Anyway, re: Please Hold Tightly… it's uh, it's like Jacob's Ladder, a trip inside the mind and a good long closeup of the terrible things we are capable of doing to ourselves inside our own minds. And John has such an excellent talent for sublimation, Maayan's talent for exposing it, as great. Need a new category of fic, 'Psychological Thriller', just for Maayan. Again, an awesome, liberating tale.
Which I snuck in a few days ago when I should have been sleeping but couldn't. Fi playing in Maayan's sandbox; writing in the 'Sleep While I Drive' universe, in that 'this stands alone, but you'll be in on a few things you wouldn't get but wouldn't diminish you're enjoyment reading this', kind of way. I like to read these kinds of stories first, then read the driving story, just for the "Oh. hehe" moments I get out of them. Although, I've read and highly recommended Maayan's Sleep While I Drive' at some earlier time… somewhere down the page there. Continuing down a dark road with the tiniest shimmers of light to keep us sane and J/A going. I haven't gritted my teeth quite so much in a long while. I just want to shake them and say, "Snap out of it!" Thanks, Fi.
SMALLVILLE:
A few I've saved up over the last week or so. Man it's hard to fit in reading for pleasure time.
So. Why is Ally recc'ing it when the majority won't or can't read it? Well, 1. Jenn. Normally I'd say no more, but… 2. While the erotica is disturbing because of the pairing, the bulk of the story told is a painful examination of the choices made possible by people who are raised in the absence of love, or any other emotionally based doctrine. I found it painful in the extreme, and a valid examination of a couple of highly messed up sibs.
Inspired by Five Things That Aren't True, and a bit of gratuitous prompting from Te, we get Three Things That Aren't True. Three short vignettes that use the characters and bizarre twists of canon that produce highly enjoyable tidbits that would otherwise never see the light of day. Excellent stuff. My particular favorite is the first out the gate: Julian.
Rated R for language and a bit of horseplay between the boys. This is a short followup to S2's "Heat" that provides a plausible and engaging segue to Clex.
I'm addicted to a clever turn of phrase. They make me linger in a paragraph and just admire the mind that can produce things like that. Here's my latest love.
"Clark tucked his grin behind a stoic mask". I just love that. I've read, probably, all of what's available from Mr. Jones and I gotta say. Uh, wow. This particular gem is a wealth of giggles and makes me go, 'awww' at the end.
A recc shamelessly stolen from Jenn, who, btb, has exquisite taste in fic as well as so much writing talent it should be illegal. And, frankly, I'd happily recc everything available from Brighid, she wields the romance angle with a sweet, angsty edge. Rarely rising to the level of an R rating, mostly PG to PG13. Read and enjoy, this is beautiful stuff.
And in the completely guilty pleasure zone, I'm addicted to Rhiannon's Orbiting Series. Been reading it for a few months now, and yes, sad but true, we actually make time to read installments in the story. And don't give us that look! Each installment stands on it's own; kinda like a lifetime series. Snapshots of a life together in really BIG chunks. And she writes erotica like nobody's business too; little too big on the Lex bashing, but we love to bruise the sweet boy from time to time too. The series in order so far: 101 Ways to say I Love You or, How To Ruin Everything, Constellations, Walmart, Seventeen, Tomorrowland and Amplified Heart (one of my favorite parts), thence Particle by Particle, and Blueprints, brings the story up to date but not complete. With luck, it'll never be complete. *g* Please bear in mind that this story is almost pure romantic fluff. Sure, they have their problems, like any couple… well, almost any couple, given one's a superpowered alien and the other is a gazillionaire and very, very yummy, but mostly... pure romantic fluff. Love it.
For some added bite to the Orbiting Series, Nerodi added a side vignette to give a little insight to a moment in Seventeen. Do not tread casually into this sidebar story as it deals with serious, unsettling issues. It is rated NC17. Here's the author's warning verbatim: Author's Notes: This story is categorized as non-con (non-consensual). If you do not know what that term means, you should not read this story. If you cannot handle non-con fiction, you should not read this story. I kid you not. This story contains graphic violence and non-consensual sex. You have been warned. So, armed with foreknowledge that what you are about to read will be disturbing, and that you are 18 or older, here's the link.
To top it off, the damn thing is being written out of order. We're asked to blame the plot bunnies. They can be unpredictable. 101 Ways was written after Tomorrowland and Amplified Heart and inserted as a sequel. After Particle by Particle the bunnies for Constellations, Seventeen and WalMart stopped by and parked themselves in between 101 Ways and Tomorrowland. Go Figure. The, ah, stories are interlaced with references to other stories, so for complete enjoyment you have to read the whole freakin' thing. *g*
Oy
Okay, instead of studying, I've read for pleasure and finished Ally's Smallville Fic Pics page. There are a few other things I'm still trying to find time to get to. First among them is Ally's 2002 Fic Pics, which I'm getting some help on from friends, but I have to actually pic them before that goes any furthur… almost done there, btw. Also going to do a Farscape Fic Pics page similar to the Smallville one (you'll find the link in the left sidebar). These are designed so that I don't have to go digging through months of archives just to find a fic recc.
Then of course: study, work, classes, work, sleep, study, more work, etc. If I get anything less than an A on the exams tomorrow I'm gonna be peeved with myself.
Honestly, I've become one of those people who never updates! I'm even boring myself! No new fic reccs, no new transcripts. Honestly. *harumph*
On the up side, I do have a truck load of excuses I could entertain with. Hm. Well, there's the 9-5 and the class load that Ally thought, 'heh, this'll be easy.' about. Then there's the homework/study/sleeping to catch up on over the weekend... and next weekend we've simply GOT to fit in a screening of Daredevil 'cause were just that kinda BBQ.
On the up side, Girl Scout cookies get delivered at the end of the month. What is it about an 8 year old in a uniform that just turns me to mush? Thank goodness Good Scout cookies make good impromptu bribes.
Is it true, or merely an urban legend, that it only takes three weeks (or is it only two) to get into a new routine and not feel so... corpselike about it?
I hear there's good stuff out there. New chapter's of UFO, MIJ2 is complete (whoo hoo!), and I'd imagine that the events of the last two episodes have created a veritable paradise of shipper fic. Check out Red's Place for the former and Kansas at ScapeRoute for the latter. As for me... I'm looking forward to seeing the last two eps and Friday's upcoming ep, sometime this week.
