Burbank CON teaser... fanfic & trivia, oh my
Okay, here's the thing.
I plan to have an outstanding time at the Burbank Convention, and I'm convinced it's going to be a lot of fun. You know, the kind of fun that comes with a need for a lot of tissues. *g* Anyway, since I'll be there, and I'll have all those tissues; I want to indulge all my special Farscape obsessions, and that means Trivia and FanFic!
For any writer or reader of FanFic, the BBQ is hoping for a somewhat organized get-together to participate in what should be a fun (at least for me) thing I have in mind. After all, it's incumbent upon us to create our own fun when the talent isn't fawning all over us during convention hours! *g*
It looks like the best time is going to be Friday or Saturday Evening, probably late, as it will have to be after the special events Creation has planned. But, hey, is anyone planning on sleeping?
So, if you think it would be fun to hang out with a bunch of writers and readers, this is the event for you. And finally, simply to torture all you writers who want to participate; here's where the real torture comes in [insert evil grin here].
The BBQ is dyin' to issue a small CON challenge to the fic writers in the room and see what you guys can come up with in about 30 minutes and 100-200 words or so. Laptops are optional; I'll have mine to lend to someone; pads and pencils will be provided for those without.
While that's goin' on maybe fling a little trivia. Hm. All this and unsupervised adults. This should be interesting.
Added bonus for the BBQ; the challenge responses will be archived here at Farscape Ally under, what else; The Burbank CON Fic Challenge! [I think I'll need some of you readers to help me come up with something... appropriately devious after all this build up].
Location for this event is scheduled to be the SaveFarscape.com Hospitality Suite. Thanks much to the folks at sf.com for the accomodation! I'll leave the information at the Bell Desk on Time/Location, just ask for the location of the Farscape Writers Group.
Hope to see as many of you there as will fit in the room, I'm dying to meet everyone I've only known through their words; both writers and you lovely feedback givers.
Leaving nothing to chance, the BBQ has wrangled the following authors to submit to her torture: birthsister, cofax, imloco2, KernilCrash, Maayan, OneEye the DRD, orchidcactus, Red (aka The Right Brain), and thewholebrain; oh, and Shrift! Hopefully those of you who I haven't had time to contact will also be there!
What can I say, the better I feel, the less time I seem to have for sitting still and simply immersing myself in a good story. Hell, haven't even had a chance to read Crash's Heaven's Gate, and I know I'll kick myself for that when I get time.
There was sort of a sound effect that happened when I saw this story, and read the summary... it's hard to describe... it was sort of an admiring groan of amazement. Gotta read this. And so must you. Let the author know what you thought at cooljinbeans@yahoo.com. Oh, and this author falls in the category of 'doesn't write enough'. Check out other fantastic writings at the JinJoint. And *gasp*... writes Smallville too. Oy! Must think of something nice for Maayan for this referral, and for updating her recommendations; and we gotta say kids, M does a tad better at the whole coherent recommendation thing than Ally. Check 'em out.
SMALLVILLE:
Well, I'm almost ready with a separate Smallville reccs page, but I thought I'd point out that with the airing of "Ryan", there's bound to be all sorts of good angsty fic comin' up.
Final part is rated NC17. This story is the sequel to the better than great Cloths of Heaven which can be found at Ally's Archive. In lieu of Ally's recc, cause we don't get to read it until tomorrow, here are some other reader recommendations.
Scrubschick: "Fanfic does NOT get any better than this! <scrubs wails> 'I wanna write like Crash!' <BG> As do we all. As do we all."
Maurauder Pilot: "Well, I've tried to reply to this several times now, and each time I've found myself unable to form coherent thought to express myself. This is just so incredible. Hauntingly, achingly beautiful in tone and cadance, lyrical in dialouge and characterization, it draws the reader in and demands total devotion. Reading this gives the reader's heart license to soar and imparts flight to the imagination. You truly do justice to John and Aeryn with your deep understanding of their characters while performing a great service to your readers with your gift of words. Epic love story indeed. Thank-you so much. I think I'll just go read it again."
Yes, we are very happy to see Part 3 of this continuing story. Some reader reccs:
frelledbyfate: "I'm very, very concerned. Must re-read all three parts, and hope my brain is putting the puzzle pieces together wrong. Please let me be wrong!
Evil, BK you are evil."
What can I say? We LOVE evil authors. hehe. Can't wait to get caught up! And, hey, if we can get fic this good just by crankin' out trannies, we're NEVER gonna stop. *g*
This POV is so tough, but Angel sells it nicely. Gonna kill the beta though. You guys oughta know how ultra-picky we are. Hey, no runnin'! Get back here!
OMG. There are now 30 parts to Atana's Waltz in Caanan, and I'm dyin' to read it for the title alone. Well, not really, but the dyin' part. Yep. Judging by the feedback, the story is being very well received. But... 30+ links? Arg! Geez. I have a constitution of ... something very constitutioney. **Ally slinks off to pout**
Can't believe it, but that's all the time we have tonight. More tomorrow, we hope. Check Leviathan. Maybe something snuck in there while we weren't looking. Later.
In an incredible act of organization and timeliness, I received my gold seating tickets for the Burbank Convention today. Yay! B34... B34... other than being really excited, I feel like I'm somewhere inside a very surreal round of 'Bingo'tm.
Short character vignette. Setting is ep filler for Promises, nicely encompassing events up to that point. It's all about control. And, yes, I am waiting on 'Without'.
Double Exposure, Part 1 ::R::, Part 2 ::NC17::, by birthsister
Reposting a fic tanked by ff.net, and answering the question: "Where the hell is birthsister?" at the same time. Love multi-purpose fic. This one's post 'Thanks For Sharing'. More angst than you can shake a stick at, but a whole lot of comfort.
I've said it before, and I'll say it again. Good authors are made, not born. It also helps to learn good habits from a great writer. WIP by a promising 12 year old author. Read and offer encouragement. Some nice chuckles and an excellent understanding of the characters. I'd place somewhere around S1. Very ambitious and complex.
Unrealized Reality (UR), branching off after Fractures. It's not that I want the story to end, it's that I want to read the whole story so bad my teeth ache. But we are nothing if not patient. WIP Continues.
Ah HAH! Oh, God, thanks you guys. I see applying a little pressure works. Ah. I LOVE D'Argo. He just so isn't used enough. It's an insidious little WIP of a Future Fic that we just can't resist. Damn it.
Following the events of Nocturne and Lineage, here's a nice bunny on the complexities of relationships, and frankly if it weren't Lionel and Lex we're talking about here, I wouldn't be as worried about what that means for Martha Kent. Achingly sweet and dark allll at the same time.
Hallelujah! Orchid made it all the way to Texas, proving that inky and the BBQ know nothing at all about spatial relationships. We figured her somewhere near Orion's Belt last Tuesday. Although still enroute, she took a bit of time to update Orchid's Place. Drop by and say 'Hey'. She's plotting fic. You can smell something burning.
Meantime, if you've read fic and not left feedback, the BBQ summarily throws you to the Lions over at Maayan's rant on the subject. Are we reading? Not reading? Or just not contacting the author 'cause it's just so embarrassing to know how to read and write? Hang. Your. Heads.
I've got one line of my Haiku... this writing stuff sucks: "Fans win, SciFi Loses" Only two more that make sense (more or less) in context, and I'll be ready to mail it. *pant pant* I'm hoping to use "pear-shaped" somehow... On to the fic.
A UR, almost abstractly poetic. And I'm smacking anyone who feeds the author with, "John wouldn't do that!". Uh-oh, but, I think I detected a little bit of comfort in all of that hurt. Can Maayan be losing her touch? *g* At any rate, my lip curled up in a half smile there at the end. Maybe I'm just masochistic. Lovely framework of a road traveled.
Crap. I'm doing it again, and I just hate to be teased. But this one is gonna be good if the teaser means anything. Now, if only the author can come through for us. Caution: WIP. New to Ally author. Okay, and, everyone reading.... please pelt the author with many, many pleas for continuation to conclusion. If I can't read the rest of this story I'll probably implode and nobody wants that.
I suppose I deserve this. Genuinely entertaining Aeryn fic. Almost didn't read it due to that disclaimer. Don't let your assumptions guide you!
Let's see, where shall we start? Nicely constructed and written piece, excellent pacing with just a coupla draggy spots, but they make you go, "awwww", so that's forgiven. Some clever plot twists that had my eyebrows arching or lips curling in a grin. Loved it, ac. Another one outta the park. [And that's how the BBQ gets out of sending feedback! LOL -- Feedback by email to the author is like ice cold lemonade on a hot, hot day after you've been paving really busy roads and had irate drivers yellin' at you all day long and... Well, you get the idea.
"Did you ever have one of those days?" Well, duh. Doesn't everyone?
Friday's To-Do List is up at Save Farscape. It tickles my fancy, and now I gotta find out what exactly a Haiku is.
If you haven't yet, please please please, complete the new Demographics Survey. This survey is closing on November 4th, and we wouldn't want you to not get counted as a valuable supporter of Farscape!
Running out of town again this weekend, Ally is getting noticeably shorter. But we are still makin' like an army with the letter writing. Heh. Mostly because we have a very understanding boss who is out of the office... a lot. *g*
And speaking of Maayan...(what can I say, I'm tired, my segues are; therefore, weak) I gotta agree. Most of my introspection is limited to 'What the hell am I doing?!', and I virtually never come up with an adequate answer. This is what fiction was invented for.
And here's a reason you should go to Kansas, and why the BBQ now loves a girl named Tiriel.
Have a pleasant weekend and think good Farscape Season 5 thoughts. Hugs to all who need one. Ta!
